Icelandic ultra low cost carrier WOW Air is continuing its expansion into major US cities. It announced today that it will begin service from Miami, Florida to Reykjavik, Iceland. WOW Air is just four year old but has has been rapidly expanding throughout the United States in the last years as it establishes itself as a leading, budget international carrier. Miami will be WOW’s sixth destination in the United States following Baltimore, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Newark (which beings service this November).
In contrast to traditional legacy carriers such as British Airways or Delta Air Lines, WOW Air earns the majority of its profits by selling ultra low cost base fares and then adding supplemental fees over the course of the travel experience. While it charges for checked bags and changed flights like traditional airlines, for example, there’s also a fee for inflight meals and seat selections, something atypical for international carriers.
To start, WOW Air is offering service three times a week – Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays – and the airline may increase the number of flights down the line. Flights go on sale Thursday, starting as low as $99 for one-way flights from Miami to Iceland. One-way flights from Miami to European destinations including Paris, Frankfurt, London, Copenhagen, Dublin, Berlin, Stockholm, and Amsterdam—all via Iceland—start at $149.
WOW has earned a cult following among budget travelers, who are often willing to sacrifice comfort in exchange for rock-bottom airfares. WOW typically runs sale fares from the U.S. to a spectrum of EU destinations (connecting in Iceland) for as little as $99, opening up international travel to the most frugal of customers.
The airline also plans to make more announcements on additional North American destinations later this fall.
